Welcome Home

“Goddammit, get this thing off me! I want to see!”

“Orli, for the zillionth time, just trust me. You do trust me, don’t you?”

Having prepared a route through the forest not far from their house, Heath tried to escort the struggling blindfolded Brit to the surprise he had planned for him.

They had just moved to Australia, now that they had finally found the perfect home any couple could dream of living in. They had actually given up Australia, having seen more houses than they could even remember, but each and every one to no avail. None of them made their hearts flutter, made them feel at ease, made them feel at home. Even in England – their second-choice country – they hadn’t found the perfect home.

Surprisingly though, when they flew up to Australia to visit Heath’s parents, it was as if they hadn’t even searched in the first place. They had decided to take a walk after having had delicious dinner at the Ledger’s and then out of the blue, they had found it. It was love at first sight for the both of them.

A beautiful scrap of a house surrounded by beautiful large trees, leaves sparkling green, fluttering as the soft breeze brushed through their boughs, had somehow managed to win their hearts. They knew it would demand a lot of work to make the place liveable again, yet they didn’t care. It was the perfect house in the perfect place in the perfect country. But most importantly, it made them feel at home.

Of course the fact that a forest could practically be called their garden wasn’t depriving either. Unfortunately, they had never found the time to explore it since most of their time went into fixing up their new home. After a month of intense working – building a new kitchen so Heath could continue his passion for cooking, installing a new bathtub so Orlando could continue laying lazily in it for hours, furnishing their new bedroom so they could continue making love comfortably instead on the hard floor – Heath thought is was high time for a little celebration.

The soft singing of a nightingale embraced the peaceful silence, covering the last rays of sunlight in its melody as it concluded the end of the day and the beginning of the night. Hypnotised by the beautiful noise, Heath sustained guiding his blinded lover over to his awaiting surprise, grateful for the silence Orlando served him with. Unfortunately it didn’t last long when Orlando suddenly started whining again, when he almost stumbled over a moss-covered log, which his boyfriend tried to help him step over.

Heath heaved another sigh and didn’t answer him, continuing at guiding Orlando until he finally arrived at the place of destination. He released Orlando for a minute and stepped aside.

“Heath?” the anxious man whispered softly in the silent darkness, receiving no answer but a distant chirping of a bird finally arriving at its nest after a hard day of hunting for worms.

“Baby? Where are you?” Orlando asked again, his arms stretched out before him searchingly, yet he couldn’t find the man he was calling. “Baby, answer me. Is this a part of your game?” Still no answer and it was getting him slightly worried. He didn’t want to take the blindfold off yet, for he didn’t want to ruin Heath’s surprise just yet. He had such consideration left. If only Heath could give him permission. “Please Heath, this isn’t funny anymore. Let me take this bloody thi-.” A soft rusting not far from him startled him and he shifted, mouth slightly gaped, and without even thinking he yanked the soft fabric off his face and looked around.

A fuzzy brown little rabbit hopped hurriedly back into its hole, frightened due to the unnatural uproar in the usually quiet forest. Not far away from the hole stood the breathtaking blonde, laughing uncontrollably at the expense of the still slightly shaken Orlando.

“Oh my God! You should’ve seen your face. Totally Kodac-moment! Where’s a mirror when you need one?”

Heath laughed some more at his own – according to Orlando, tasteless – wit, face almost turning blue due to the lack of oxygen. Unimpressed and back to breathing normally, Orlando raised his eyebrows and huffed.

“Well, thank you for nothing. I could’ve tripped, you know. Bumped my head into something and gotten a concussion.”

“Geesh, don’t be such a drama-queen!”

“Pardon me, mister, but I wa-”

“Oh shush already. I didn’t bring you up here for a quarrel.”

Orlando crossed his arms over his chest and glared at Heath.

“Don’t look at me like that! Come here, I want to show you something.” Heath motioned Orlando to his side and when Orlando strode towards him, he slid his arm around Orlando’s waist, tugging him closer. “Close you’re eyes.”

“Damn you, I just took off the blindfold and you want me to close my eyes again?!”

“Orlando!” Heath growled aggravated.

“Alright, alright!” Orlando raised his hands in surrender.

“Good, now just shut up, close your eyes, and enjoy.”

He walked them through a crowded bush, twigs tugging harshly into their skin when finally the leaves separated before them.

“Okay. Now, open your eyes,” Heath instructed the impatient Brit.

And when Orlando did, he was presented with a view so magnificent it took his breath away.

In the far distance down the hill, their refined house stood between flush green trees, the orange glow of sunset shining through upon their wooden house, giving it a fairytale-dreamlike ambience. It had taken them so much time to renovate it and finally they had finished it, they could finally call it their place, their hideaway from the hectic world, their home.

Orlando smiled blissfully as he turned around to face his lover and took him into a warm and loving embrace.

“Welcome home, Orlando,” Heath whispered into the soft brown curls, tightening his grip slightly before he pulled back.

“Welcome home, Heath,” Orlando whispered back, eyes sparkling with excitement: excitements towards their new house and excitement towards their future.

They looked into each other’s eyes and smiled. They had finished their task, they were done. And now they were ready. They were ready to face the world and all its challenges, because whatever might come upon their course, whatever God might have planned for them, they would always have each other.

And now, they would always have a place to call home.

Awww...that was so cute! They have a little house and everything. Heh heh.

I gotta say, Heath is fast becoming one of my favourite characters. He's so...malleable.
